Acid Reflux Weight Loss Part 3 - Developing a Personalized Weight Loss Plan for Acid Reflux Syndrome

Posted in Health & Fitness on January 5th, 2008

Obesity and a high body mass index (BMI) are major contributors to the symptoms of acid reflux syndrome.  Therefore, it is only logical that weight loss can be an important part of your acid reflux treatment plan if you are overweight.  Carrying excess fat puts pressure on your stomach, causing your stomach contents to rise, making it more likely that the Lower Esophageal Sphincter will not be able to stop stomach acids from refluxing into the esophagus.  Additional fat in the area of the face, neck, and chest also puts more pressure on the esophagus, restricting it and weakening the ‘seal’ between itself and the stomach.

It is therefore easy to see how losing weight will generally lead to decreasing acid reflux syndrome symptoms. By reducing the fat around your stomach and esophagus, you can minimize or even eliminate many of your symptoms.  To accomplish this, lifestyle changes are required.  This includes a change in diet and activity level.

Here is some weight loss and lifestyle changes that can make a positive difference to your acid reflux syndrome symptoms:

- Increase the amount of water-soluble fiber foods in your diet.  Water-soluble fiber can be found in raw, fresh vegetables and fruits.  These are foods that are generally easily digested by your body and ensure that you remain regular so that you don’t end up bloated and avoid a toxic buildup in your digestive tract.

- Eat smaller, more frequent meals.  Try not to eat a meal that is bigger than the size of your fist in one sitting and increase the frequency of meals to about five times a day.  This not only helps your metabolism effectively digest the food you’re eating, but it also reduces the chance of over eating, helping to keep your stomach acid levels consistent.

- Try not to lie down within three hours of eating a meal.  This will help your stomach acids stay where they are supposed to be (because of gravity) allowing them to do their job of breaking down food more effectively so that you’ll receive more nutrition from everything you eat.

- Avoid carbonated and acidic drinks.  Not only do these kick acid reflux syndrome symptoms into gear, but also the average person could lose up to 20 pounds per year just by cutting them out of their diet.

- Eat an apple a day.  The old phrase says that it keeps the doctor away, and it was right.  Eating apples for many help to clear up acid reflux attacks and are healthy, weight loss-friendly sweet treats.

- If you’re feeling hungry think before you eat. Often this can because the body is dehydrated rather than needing food. Ensure you always have some water to hand to sip throughout the day and aim to have 8 – 10 8oz glasses. This helps avoid unnecessary food consumption, hydrates the body and also ‘washes’ any lingering refluxed acid out of the esophagus.

- Avoid activity that involves bending over straight after eating, as this action can place additional pressure to the LES and cause acid reflux.

Avoid falling into the trap of using commercial diet programs to lose weight for acid reflux syndrome. Though they may be effective for losing weight, they don’t necessarily help you to build the right kind of lifestyle, nor do they have acid reflux syndrome in mind in the foods that they select.

It’s important that you get to know the kinds of foods that should make up the bulk of your diet, those you can eat on occasion, and those that you should avoid altogether, not only for your waistline, but also for your acid reflux syndrome.  Though this may seem like a lot of information at first, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn about what is right and what is wrong for your digestive system.

The Facts About Endometriosis Laparoscopy

Posted in Health & Fitness on May 4th, 2007

Though ultrasound can be useful to help find signs of endometriosis, this tool does not always tell the true tale of what is going on in many women. The ultrasound is a great tool for many things, but it does have a disadvantage when it comes to diagnosing this condition. There are times when it just can’t pick up the nodules that often indicate that there is a problem. The next step after this type of diagnostics is to then use endometriosis laparoscopy surgery to get a better look at what is going on inside.

Laparoscopy is a tool that is used in many different areas of medicine. This tool takes some practice, but gives the doctor ‘eyes’ to see inside the body without being as invasive as open surgery. Laparoscopy involves a tiny camera that can be inserted into the body through a very tiny opening. It has a light attached, and can be used to aid in surgeries like gastric bypass, and can also used for exploratory surgery to search for signs of endometriosis, among other things. This greatly cuts down on recovery time for many people as the incisions are small.

When a person undergoing a laparoscopy for endometriosis, the doctor will probably make a small incision in the belly button. The patient can be either completely knocked out, or in some cases, a local anesthetic can be used so that the patient can remain awake. A small tube containing both light and a tiny video camera are inserted. Some sort of gas (almost always carbon dioxide), is usually then inserted so that the abdomen inflates. This allows the camera and the surgeon to see what’s going on inside better. This also allows others to view the surgery as well. The spots that are suspected as being areas with endometriosis growth will be explored.

There are times when this is done as a purely exploratory procedure and other times, it can be used to help the surgeon see where the endometriosis is located for removal. Though removal is sometimes possible without more incisions, there may be instances when more incisions might be needed to remove the tissues that need to be taken from the body for biopsy purposes.

These incisions are usually located down near the pubic area, in what you’ll probably know as the bikini area. Before performing this procedure your doctor should go over all of the possibilities of what should happen during the surgery, any actions they will take and if any risks are involved.
Once your endometriosis laparoscopy is done, a recovery time is normally pretty quick. Nausea is quite common, and recovery take only a few days. There may be some pain in the shoulders due to the gas that was used during the surgery. That should go away rather quickly. There may be some general pain and discomfort in the abdomen area, but painkillers usually handle it. If pain goes above and beyond what the pills can handle, or if you develop a fever, go back to your doctor immediately to make sure everything is okay.

Buying Drugs Online without a Prescription? What to Look Out For

Posted in Prescription Drugs Online on April 30th, 2007

Illegal for both the buyer and the seller, buying drugs online without a prescription has become common across the internet. Most of the web sites doing such illegal practice are based outside the United States. Patients usually just visit the web site, answer a few medical questions, and within weeks or days the drugs are delivered.

If you are considering buying drugs online without any prescription you need to beware. Can you really vouch for the safety of the medication bought on an illegal site? Likewise, it is also important to make sure the online pharmacy has customer service that is always available in case you experience negative symptoms after using the medication. The bottom line is that no reputable pharmacy would sell you drugs without any prescription since they follow the set standards set by NABP. And they know that violation of any of the set rules and guidelines would mean cancellation of their license.

When considering buying drugs online without a prescription, remember that you may be gambling with you own health, not knowing the full effects of the drugs on their body. . The danger lies on the fact that they cannot buy their required medicine on licensed online pharmacy since they would be required to present their doctor’s prescription and the likelihood of them buying from just any available online pharmacy that is not licensed by the NABP is there.

The problem with buying from unlicensed online pharmacy is that you are not sure of the quality of the medicine. You may never know that you have been sold fake medicines, medications that could either cause side effects or not provide treatment for the symptoms you have. Aside from that, there is also the danger of you buying expired medicines or substandard medicines that contain ingredients that are either too strong or too weak which may adversely affect your health. So why put yourself in danger? Always obtain your doctor’s prescription so that you can purchase safely online.

Another way of determining the safety of your chosen online pharmacy is to look for seals from the board of pharmacy in the state where the pharmacy is doing business. Also, don’t forget to look for posted policies about prescription verification and customer support, a professional looking site and a posted address or phone number where you can call for assistance.

If you really want to be sure that you have chosen a legitimately safe pharmacy, look for the verified internet pharmacy practice sites or Vipps seal which shows that a pharmacy has been certified by National Association of Boards of Pharmacy which is a national group in Park Ridge, III., representing the fifty state pharmacy boards and also covers outside the country.

Do You Need An Ultrasound For Endometriosis?

Posted in Health & Fitness on April 27th, 2007

Endometriosis can be a tricky thing to find because it doesn’t often show up when ultrasound and x-rays are done, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use these means to find it. There are some doctors who are really good at using ultrasound for detecting endometriosis, though even they will miss it at times. It often depends on the severity of the cases, where it is located, and if other conditions can be eliminated from consideration. While ultrasound for endometriosis can be a useful tool, it might often miss what is really going on.

The most common type of ultrasound used for detecting endometriosis is vaginal, but a rectal ultrasound may be used as well. This means a wand is inserted into the vagina (or rectum). A scanner is then moved across the belly. The sound waves that are used will form a picture or video of the area.

The pictures can then be studied for some of the signs of this condition. The most common things that ultrasounds can find are the nodules that form as a sign of the condition, and sometimes scar tissue can be noted if it is there. This is not only done on the reproductive area, but might also be used to find endometriosis that has spread to the colon or other areas nearby.

This procedure usually does not take very long, and many doctors that specialize in childbirth and fertility have the necessary equipment right in their office. A patient will be referred to someone like this if they have been seeing their general practitioner about the possibility of having endometriosis. This procedure can usually be done right then and there on site, though you may have to make an appointment with a technician. It is also a pretty straight forward and fast procedure, and in most cases, it causes almost no pain, though there might be some discomfort if the wand is put into the vagina or rectum for the procedure.

Ultrasound normally comes after a physical examination is done, and there are unanswered questions about what the cause of your problems is. Though there are times when the ultrasound will easily detect the presence of endometriosis, there is also the possibility that the ultrasound will fail.

Either way, after this procedure is completed, a patient might then be scheduled for laparoscopy. This involves a small, lighted camera that is inserted in through the belly button or through small incisions near the pubic area. This can be used for a closer view of your reproductive or internal organs. The places affected can then be treated after a biopsy of any suspicious tissues is done.

Some doctors might view ultrasound for endometriosis as a standard part of the search for the condition, while others may think it is not effective enough to be relied upon. Most will still do it, as there is always hope they may notice something this way. Either way, a person should remember that just because there was nothing found via the ultrasound, that does not mean that they do not have endometriosis. Further evaluation should always be done to be sure.

Is Tumeric Endometriosis Relief Possible?

Posted in Health & Fitness on April 23rd, 2007

Endometriosis can be painful for many women, and there are times when the traditional methods of managing this condition don’t offer much relief, or the relief does not last long enough. Hormone therapy is often used to treat this condition, but many women hate what it does to their bodies. When this happens, some wonder if there are natural remedies that might help. One of the options is to try is tumeric endometriosis relief. Endometriosis can be hard to diagnosis and hard to treat, but there may indeed be some benefit to taking tumeric. However, before starting to supplement your diet you should talk to your doctor first.

Tumeric is commonly found in curry. It is used for many things, including being touted as a promising treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. This substance is said to stop abnormal cell reproduction. It might stop it from beginning, and can even help once it has started by retarding or even reversing the growth. If you understand that endometriosis is basically the abnormal growth of cells where they should not be, you can understand how this common spice might help.

Not only is it thought that tumeric can help with abnormal cell growth, it has other benefits for the body as well. It is known to help break up and remove toxins from the system. It is a great supplement to help with inflammation throughout the body, and helps to stimulate the immune system. It is also used to help with cancer for some who want to try it, and it is supposed to work by stopping blood vessels from growing that feed the tumors and cancerous cells. That will cause the cells and the tumors to shrink and die.

If you want to try tumeric for endometriosis relief, and you have your doctor’s okay to do so, you can start by soaking the dry root and then allowing it to dry again. Add about 1/4th of a teaspoon to many of the foods that you eat. You might put it in soup or have it on your vegetables. You can also buy this in powdered form in health food stores or in stores that specialize in herbal remedies. It should not be heated too thoroughly, so it might be a good idea to add it just at the end of the cooking time for whatever dish you are adding it to. If you choose to take it in pill form as a supplement, you can take 500 milligram doses twice a day.

Remember that just because you want to try a tumeric endometriosis treatment does not mean that it is safe for you to do so. Always talk to your doctor first, and remember that there may be some side effects that you should take into considerations. Though these are rare when the recommended dosage is taken, they can happen. Some find that they have problems with rash on the skin. It may also cause some harm to the stomach if taken for long periods of time. There are other more serious side effects that have shown up during animal testing, so be sure to talk to your doctor about concerns and what to watch out for while taking it.

Recognizing The Early Stages of Endometriosis

Posted in Health & Fitness on April 13th, 2007

Though many women never think about the stages of endometriosis until they are told they have it, it is probably a more common condition than most realize. Endometriosis is the build up of endometrial tissue growing outside of the uterus. This can lead to pain and infertility issues.

There are some treatments for it, but no cure. Any women of reproductive age may develop this condition, but the exact reason why some get it and some don’t seems to be a mystery. Though it is estimated that only five percent of women (of reproductive age) have endometriosis, the numbers might be much higher. What is more confusing is that the early stages of endometriosis can go unnoticed.

Some studies suggest that women who begin their periods at a very young age might have a slightly higher risk for developing endometriosis. It would also seem that those with this condition have shorter cycles, with heavier and longer periods than other women of reproductive age. These alone are not signs that a person has endometriosis, but they are similarities in diagnosed cases. Though a genetic link is not certain, a woman is more likely to suffer from endometriosis if a close female member of family, such as her mother, aunt or sister, has it.

Some of the early stages of this condition are quite vague, and a diagnosis might be a matter of elimination. One of the first signs is experiencing problems conceiving. This may not be evident early because there is a current trend for women to put off having children until their thirties for a variety of reasons. Infertility has many causes though, so this sign is often an ambiguous one. When other reasons for infertility are ruled out, a doctor might then begin to look for signs of endometriosis if they are not exceedingly obvious.

Another of the early signs of endometriosis is an unusual amount or increase in pain during a woman’s period. Though some women notice this, others have had this problem for a long time and they think it is the way it is supposed to be. The cramping, bloating, and pain will be more severe, and the periods will tend to last longer. A woman might also notice that she has abnormal spotting before her period begins. Some with this condition complain of pain during intercourse. However, some severe cases may present no pain what-so-ever. When that happens, diagnosis can only come in the later stages, and can be trickier to treat.

While treatment is much easier if identified early, this often isn’t possible. Treatment might be quicker and easier if found early, and fertility might be restored much quicker, even if the window might still be somewhat slim.

Many women with this condition find some relief though hormone therapy, and are able to have children and enjoy relief from their symptoms. Some women with this think they may never have children, but go on to have large families. There is no cure, but if the early stages of endometriosis are noticed, it can be managed much more easily.

How Homeopathic Treatment Can Bring Gout Symptom Relief

Posted in Health & Fitness on April 6th, 2007

There are times when anyone can become frustrated with pain and discomfort, and they might wonder if other types of treatments might work better than what they are currently getting. This is becoming more and more popular, and homeopathy is what most turn to first. This is treatment based on methods other than prescription medications and surgeries to help with various ailments. Homeopathy can zero in on one gout symptom, but also tends to focus on the healing and care of the entire body as well. The basic idea behind this practice is that some believe small doses of some medications or herbs can mimic illness in healthy people, and those same things can be given to someone suffering from that illness to promote healing.

In most cases, a physician who practices homeopathic medicine will suggest that any of the things that might help with gout be taken one at a time to see what works. It can be a longer process, but finding the right thing will bring much relief for some. Usually one dose is taken, and then is given a certain amount of time to work. If it does work, it should be left alone to see how long it works. How much and how often will be determined by the type of medication and how well it works. If nothing happens, that type should be eliminated and something else will be tried.

One type that might be helpful is Bryonia. This can be good when pain is substantial, and tenderness is a huge problem. Pain comes from walking and touching. It might make a person not want to be touched at all, and they may want to be alone. Colchicum is another that is very much like this one. It focuses on gout pain the heel or foot. Since the most common spot for gout is the toe, this works great for many. When the joint is red, swollen, and tender to touch, this can be used. It is especially useful when given to someone who seems to have seasonal flare ups, and tends to be fatigued when stricken.

There are also some that are useful when the pain is not quite as severe, but it still needs to be taken care of quickly. Rhus toxicodendron is for someone who has stiff and painful joints that are sometimes hot and swelling may be apparent. However, it would seem that some movement might help, so the flare up is not quite as tender to the touch. Berberis vulgaris is for a pain that is all over the body rather than completely localized to one part of the body. It helps when motions and walking are painful, and the body as a whole needs some relief.

Though it is possible to find and try these things at home, it is always a good idea to find someone who is licensed in homeopathic medicine to assist someone who seeks relief. They have the benefit of knowing the history of this practice that goes back in time almost 2000 years. There is a huge benefit to trying things like this with someone who has knowledge and experience on their side. Some of these things can interact with prescriptions, so consult with a doctor if you are taking anything, or want to stop taking something. These can help with almost any gout symptom, but it is never a good idea to put the health at risk in any fashion.

Herbal Tea Home Remedy For Acid Reflux

Posted in Health & Fitness on March 30th, 2007

There are many things that cause problems for those who have GERD (otherwise known as acid reflux). There are some things you can’t eat, and some that you should. There are times when this can be very confusing, and many don’t want to rely on medications to make all foods tolerable. If you want a home remedy for acid reflux, there are things you can try. One of these things is drinking herbal teas. Some of them will help, and some might make matters worse, so you should know which to have and which to avoid.

When choosing herbal teas, there is one important thing to think about when you are choosing what you want to try. Caffeine is a known trigger for acid reflux, and it should be avoided. That means that any herbal teas that you try must be caffeine-free. Though you can get decaffeinated coffee to drink, even that is known to aggravate GERD and should be avoided. This makes decaffeinated herbal teas the best choice when you seek a hot and soothing drink. Some of them might even help with some of your symptoms of acid reflux.

Many suggest that ginger can help sooth acid reflux symptoms, and if you can find it in a tea, a cup after a meal might help your stomach settle down for the night. You can mix peppermint with aniseed and lavender for a great tasting and soothing blend. You should boil a few cups of water and a teaspoon of your herbal mix, then drain the herbs after sitting for about ten minutes. If you boil this tea and want to have it sweetened, you might try honey instead of sugar or artificial sweetener.

Chicory Root can also be used to make a great herbal tea. You boil a few cups of this and then let sit for a while. You can then drink the tea with honey if you wish. Marshmallow tea might also help. This is not tea made from the marshmallows in your cupboard as the name might suggest, but from a root by the same name. This is known to soothe the digestive system. Another popular type of tea is Chamomile. This is also known to help soothe the symptoms of acid reflux.

You can make many of these on your own, but you can also find them in natural food stores or special sections of your grocery store. Any of these teas might help you feel better, but you won’t know until you try them. However, it is important that you talk with your doctor before you try them, as some can have side effects that you need to know about, and they might also mix badly with any prescription drugs that you might be taking for your acid reflux or for any other reason. You usually will not have any problems with this type of home remedy for acid reflux, but you don’t want to take a chance with your health.

Is Hidden Caffeine Aggravating Your IBS?

Posted in Health & Fitness on March 28th, 2007

There are many things that can trigger bouts of IBS, but there are times when you might not know what is doing it. There are many things in the diet that can cause the bloating, cramping, constipation, or diarrhea that comes with flare ups, but some of them are easier to pick out than others. Have you considered that hidden caffeine is aggravating your IBS symptoms? It’s quite possible. You may have cut out coffee and caffeinated soda, but there are other places where you might be unknowingly getting enough caffeine to upset your system.

Diet Products:  There are many different diet products on the market that you might be taking. Some are supplements that help with energy or with appetite suppression. There are weight control bars that are much like granola bars, and other products that are closely related. These often contain natural substances that have caffeine in them. It won’t necessarily say so on the label though, so you have to know what to look for. If you don’t recognize anything on the label, make sure you look each thing up to see what it really is and if it might contain caffeine. Guarana is one of these that claims to be a natural alternative to caffeine, but it’s basically the same thing and will have the same effect on your IBS symptoms.
Coffee:  You probably already know there is caffeine in coffee, and you may have had to cut it out of your diet. Some like to have decaffeinated coffee instead so they can still enjoy the taste of coffee. The problem is that there are some brands that are called decaf, yet they still have some caffeine in them. The amount may be small, but it still might be enough to aggravate IBS.

Coffee Flavoring:  Though you might think that ice cream and yogurts would only contain an artificial flavor that mimics the taste of coffee, many of them really have caffeine in them. Check the labels carefully to see if there is caffeine. You may have not thought to look, but if you eat these products often, this might be a troublesome source you never considered.

Candy:  Sadly, chocolate contains caffeine, and it might contain more than you think. This includes chocolate drinks like hot cocoa. Something as small as a Hershey’s Kiss has caffeine, though it should only contain 1 mg.

Medications:  There are some medications that claim they are non-drowsy. These are supposed to help with your symptoms while keeping you awake. It makes sense. No one wants to take something for a cold only to fall asleep at work during a meeting. The problem is that some of them use caffeine to help keep you awake, and you probably don’t realize it. This is also a problem with some children’s medications also. Children should have very little, if any, caffeine.

Eliminating these things might help, but if it seems to make no difference, it might not be hidden caffeine that is aggravating your IBS symptoms. You may be able to tolerate some of them on occasion if you choose ones that have a very low amount. When it comes to decaf coffee, you might have to experiment with a few different brands until you find one that it totally caffeine-free.
